"The New Sound of our Generation"

by Edleea Brewster

If you’ve ever heard any of Travis Greene songs, then you would know that he is an amazing artist. His most recent album, The Hill was released on October 30, 2015. While the entire album is filled with amazing songs that each tell a story, two of my favorites are “Intentional” and “Just Want You”. While they are on the same album, each song sparks different thoughts, emotions, feelings, and questions. After hearing “Intentional” and watching its music video, I felt inspired. This song activates the courage and hope within me. The lyrics of this song brings me happiness, encouragement, and joy.

“All things are working for my good, cause he’s intentional, never failing” are the words repeated multiple times throughout this song. These lyrics are not simply words, they are truth. According to Romans 8:28 “All things work together for good to them that love God”. This song is not just something that Travis Greene came up with, it is based off of biblical facts. The song is a reminder that everything I go through is for a reason.  It is a reminder that I must stand firm, no matter how many obstacles life throws at me. As I watched the video, I felt a sense of relief because I got to see Travis Greene experiencing an abundance of love, joy, and happiness. The music video exemplified the victory that people get to experience after facing hurts, pains, and trials. With the many sorrows and hardships that people face daily, it can be easy for one to want to give up. Whether you’re 19 or 90, black or white, or male or female, this song is universal and can inspire people everywhere.

As earlier stated, “Just Want You” is another song that I really love from The Hill. The lyrics of this song is “Take everything, I don’t want it, I don’t need, I just want you” This song makes me cry almost every time I hear it. The words of this songs speaks to the depths of my heart. It makes me think about how everything the world offers seems so appealing, but eventually leaves people in utter ruin at the end. This song keeps me humble and reminds me that I am nothing without God.  Though it has only a few words that are repetitive, its meaning is very deep. It tells a story about people who want nothing but God. It is a bold declaration to the world that we live in. In today’s society, it seems as if everyone is focused on getting money, buying nice cars, having the best career, and living the perfect American dream life. While it is not bad to have or want these things, it becomes a problem when people idolize them instead of God.  Many songs fail to tell their listeners the truth. This song helps people to look at their lives from a different perspective. It challenges people to evaluate where they really are in life and that is what I like the most about this song.  This song appealed to me as a Christian young woman because it encourages me to never give up and stand firm in my faith. I have always loved songs with positive messages and with the ability to touch my heart. After listening to this song, I felt the freedom to be myself and not care about the opinions of others.

If Travis Greene's goal was to encourage and give hope through these two songs, then he definitely achieved it. If anyone knows what it is like to go through trauma, then it would be Greene himself. He is a living testimony to the words that he sings of.  At only four years old, Travis fell from a four story building. The doctors pronounced him dead at the scene. His mother gathered all the faith she had and screamed “the blood of Jesus” over him. Now 32 years old, Travis uses music as an outlet to share his story with the world. No matter what season of life I am in, whenever I hear these songs, I know that I will always feel hope, encouragement, peace, and joy. Both songs will always hold a very special place in my heart.

Watch the music video to "Intentional" and listen to "Just Want You" and be encouraged!
