"My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy"

by Eileen Seidenberger

In the year 2009 Kanye West exiled himself to Hawaii following the VMA incident with Taylor Swift and his failing relationship with model Amber Rose. The creative process for the album started after the backlash from the 2009 VMAs. After My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was released in 2010 it went on to become a masterpiece that explores the darker sides of celebrities, fame, and love. The album was praised by both fans and critics. It also won the 2011 Grammy for Best Rap Album. In My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Yeezy blows past all the rules of hip-hop and pop. They’re features from many epic hip-hop artists, there’s also surprise guests from Bon Iver to Fergie, Chris Rock, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, John Legend, The-Dream, Fergie, RZA, Kid Cudi, Nicki Minaj, Ryan Leslie, Charlie Wilson, Tony Williams, La Roux’s Elly Jackson and even an Elton John piano solo. The album is known to be Kanye West’s best album to date for his daring and creative production, lyrics, and art. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy created a transcendent sound unheard in hip hop and pop. The journey towards the album is what made the album special. In conclusion, the album is filled with meaning, production, and finally it was Kanye proving to the industry that he was here to stay.

How many rappers actually make good music? Kanye West isn’t a typical rapper who raps about life on the streets. Kanye influences not only the hip hop music industry, but the entire music industry. Kanye has sold out tours, won numerous awards, and has had many billboard #1 hits. Kanye has done this while keeping his music uplifting and inspirational. Kanye West is one of few artists who speaks his mind whether it’s controversial or not. Kanye is for the people, “If you’re a Kanye West fan you’re not a fan of me, you’re a fan of yourself. You will believe in yourself. I’m just the espresso. I’m just the shot in the morning to get you going, to make you believe that you can overcome the situation that you’re going through all of the time.”

In his song Gorgeous, Kanye describes the nature of racial injustices in America. His lyrics speak to the youth of America and touches on subjects that need to be spoken on. He raps, “Face it, Jerome gets more time than Brandon” . The line explains that an African American man who does the same crime as a Caucasian male will get more time in prison. In his single All of The Lights Kanye touches on the problems that come with being famous. The song serves as a literal story of troubles in the home, and also as a metaphor for Kanye’s struggles with fame and his relation to hip-hop. The song touches on domestic abuse, imprisonment, separation/divorce etc.

Kanye started the album with wanting to create something that “Can make someone that hates him the most, have to really respect him and love the album.” The album spoke to me in the aspect of hearing truths through music. I was in middle school when I first heard the album and the production grabbed my attention. Not many hip hop artist or artists in different genres, speak about issues in the world that need to be touched on. Kanye touches on many controversial topics on this album. He speaks on the true and harsh realities that affect our society today

Kanye West is misunderstood. To some people he comes off as arrogant and to the rest he comes off as genius. Kanye is for the people. A genius who once struggled to get his music to the public because the music industry never heard such a unique sound. A artist who changed hip-hop with each album. He created a path for a whole generation to follow with his album 808’s and Heartbreaks. Kanye West is one of the most creative artists of  not only our generation, but past and future. His talent and creativity is overlooked by his arrogance, but true artist know who he is. A talented and respected musician, Paul McCartney praises the work of Kanye. With over 85 million albums sold, 21 Grammys, over 150 music awards, makes Kanye one of the greatest artists of all time. This is also just the beginning. He isn’t anywhere close to being finished.
